PRESS RELEASE COUNTY AND GROUP BROADBAND SCHEME

A meeting was held last week in Drumboylan Community Centre for the County & Group Broadband Scheme, which is currently being set-up to bring Broadband to the North Roscommon/south Leitrim Rural Areas.   The scheme is promoted by  the Department of Communications Marine and Natural Resources, Caitriona McQuillan  (091-563842) Regional Broadband Co-ordinator with the Western Regional Authority, facilitated the meeting and Mr John Gibbons and Mr Cyril Moriarty,  Last Mile Wireless,  gave a presentation on Wireless Broadband Service, which allows broadband to be delivered by radio wave to a receiver.  A comprehensive presentation was given and the group have invited Last Mile Wireless back again for an important meeting  which will be held on Wednesday 13th April, at 9.00 pm.  in Drumboylan Community  Centre,  Drumboylan, Co Roscommon.  Last Mile are to present a plan showing mast sitings and line of sight details to the group.

Other individuals, groups and businesses are invited to this meeting to hear the presentations and to join  the group to apply for broadband in rural areas.   The purpose of the broadband scheme is to deliver a broadband service to rural areas via wireless or satellite service.   Funding is available  to group broadband schemes  and service providers have been invited to partner with groups and eligible communities with populations  of up to 1500.   Larger towns may also apply where the projects address the broadband needs of the underserved, suburb or hinterland  of  the town area.

This is a unique opportunity to apply  through the Western Regional Authority for this scheme, any one interested should not miss this meeting as the application date closes on 28th April, 2005, for the first round of funding.

Addition:

There will  be a second presentation by Mr Paul Cunnane, from Westnet, another wireless broadband provider at the meeting next Wednesday.  His mobile is 087 9083323.   He may be in the area over the weekend to survey  for 'line of sight' etc.  We hope to have one other service provider there on the night in order to have competitive tendering.

We look forward to seeing you there.
